Composed of five colorful, monumental forms, this work appears abstract at first glance, but is created by deconstructing and reconfiguring the five interlocking rings of the modern Olympic symbol.
The Olympic rings represent the connection, harmony, and peace of the world through five interlocking circles. Yet throughout its history, the Olympic Games have existed alongside international conflict and political tension—from the terrorist attack at the Munich Games and Cold War boycotts to political propaganda at the Berlin Games.
While the Olympic rings appear harmonious in two dimensions, attempting to reproduce their interlocking structure in three-dimensional space creates twists and contradictions that prevent the same balanced form from existing. The familiar image of five perfectly interlocking rings is, in this sense, an illusion—an ideal that cannot fully exist in physical space.
カラフルでモニュメンタルな5つのパーツからなる本作品は、一見抽象的でありながら、近代オリンピックの象徴である五輪マークを解体・再構成することで生まれています。
五輪マークは、5つの輪の重なりによって世界の結びつき、調和、平和を象徴しています。しかしその歴史を振り返ると、ミュンヘン大会でのテロ事件、冷戦期のボイコット、ベルリン大会での政治的プロパガンダなど、オリンピックは常に国際社会の摩擦や緊張と隣り合わせにありました。
さらに、平面上では調和して見える五輪のイメージも、その重なりを3次元で再現しようとすると捻れが生じ、同じ構造を成立させることができません。美しく重なり合う五輪の姿は、現実の空間には存在し得ない、一種の虚像なのです。
