A sculptural work in which a massive cubic structure is inserted between basketballs and a hoop. Multiple basketballs at the base support the entire structure, while the goal is positioned at its highest point.
Using the physical conditions of gravity and balance, the work questions what a “goal” is, how it is established, and from whose perspective an action is defined as a score or a victory. The seemingly solid cube rests upon soft and unstable basketballs, suggesting that systems, rules, and social order—however rigid they may appear—are ultimately supported by fragile and shifting individuals and social relationships.
The work also considers the logic of the free throw: when a violation occurs in a team sport, the opposing side is granted a rule-sanctioned opportunity to retaliate. This structure echoes the ways acts of self-defense and retaliation can become legitimized and institutionalized within society. The basketball hoop therefore becomes more than a place to score; it can also be read as a symbol of a “goal,” “victory,” and ultimately, “justice.”
Through the contained system of rules found in sport, the work asks who defines justice, and under what conditions punishment or retaliation becomes accepted as legitimate.
