This two-part work is made from lint collected over approximately four years from laundry separated into two categories: whites and colors. The accumulated fibers were formed into felt-like surfaces.
Laundry is an everyday act that requires a binary decision—white or color. Yet the lint collected from each group did not result in a clear contrast of black and white. Instead, both emerged as different shades of gray.
What began as a binary choice ultimately produced something that belongs to neither side. In these unexpectedly ambiguous shades of gray, the artist recognizes a reflection of his own cultural identity as Japanese—a sensibility that does not necessarily divide things into absolute opposites, but finds meaning in the space between them.
The work is both a record of the classifications and choices repeated in everyday life and an exploration of how cultural identity can reveal itself unexpectedly through material and color.
白物と色物に仕分けされた洗濯物から出るリント（糸くずや綿埃）を約4年間にわたって集め、フェルト状に成形した2点の作品です。
洗濯という日常的な行為では、衣類を「白物／色物」という二つのカテゴリーに分類することが求められます。しかし、それぞれから回収されたリントは、白と黒のように明確に分かれることなく、どちらも異なる濃度のグレーとなりました。
「白か黒か」という二者択一の判断から生まれたものが、結果としてそのどちらでもない。 その偶然生まれた曖昧なグレーに、作者は、物事を必ずしも白と黒に分けず、その「あいだ」に意味を見出す、自身の日本人としての文化的アイデンティティとの重なりを見出しています。
本作は、日常の中で繰り返される分類と選択の記録であると同時に、意図せず生まれた色彩の中に、自らの文化的背景を発見する試みでもあります。
